Little things make the difference

big smallEN

Two months have passed since Attar’s Bat Mitzvah. We’ve gone back to our day-to-day lives and regular schedule (well, a somewhat regular schedule – does anyone actually have a routine?).

I’ve already written about the preparations,

the reception,

and the table settings.

And I’ve promised numerous times to write about the absolute most important part of all the happy celebrations, at least as far as this blog is concerned.

So here it is —

Light and Darkness: {home made} chocolate coins

chocolate coins EN.jpg

Eight nights;

We run from party to party, and celebration to school performances, and yet another holiday party-

Sometimes there’s time for an evening spent at home.

We light the candles; sing a little (or a lot), with friends or just family, play Sevivon {draddle } with new rules every night, and eat. Of course.

Every night we incorporate a dish inspired by the holiday to the dinner meal, while trying to minimize the amount of oil we inhale. Continue reading

Bat Mitzvah #3: Setting up the tables

blue rings+textEN

People get ready,

Call a babysitter if need be,

Come back early from work,

Shower,

Put on nice clothes,

Do their hair,

Do their makeup,

Tie their ties,

Get into the car,

Sometimes drive halfway across the country,

And arrive at the Bat Mitzvah celebration.

And it’s all very exciting because this time we invited everyone to our daughter’s Bat Mitzvah.

Bat Mitzvah #2: People will come

sticker roll-openingEN

Lists have been made

A date has been set

An auditorium has been booked

Hand made Invitations have been created

Envelopes have been licked, sent off, and a few RSVPs have already trickled in.

Soon the guests will arrive, and then what?

What happens first? Where does everyone stand? Or sit? And for that matter, when des everyone sit? And perhaps most importantly when does everyone eat?

First off, a few deep breaths; in and out, in and out, there you go.

The answer is quite simple really; all it takes is a little planning.

Bat Bitzvah #1: Listing Therapy

It happens to the best of families:

A baby girl is born, grows up lovely and beautiful,

Is blessed with health and happiness as one could only wish.

Time passes, we celebrate her first birthday, second, third…ten, eleven

And without our noticing, suddenly it’s time to start planning a Bat Mitzvah.

{ Where did the time go? }

When did she have time to grow up so fast?

{ Thank goodness for pictures}

So where does one start?

A Magnetizing Storytime

finishedEN

There are so many good reasons for story time. It supports early literacy, language and listening skills, cultivates imagination and creativity, and fosters a love of books. Best of all, story time is fun!

And story time is even more fun, when I’m reading MY book to the the cutest, most curious, funniest and very clever kids I’ve met lately.

{ well, I didn’t get the chance to meet all children – working on this one :)) }

I’m not little, I’m fun sized!

Our family celebrates two winter birthdays with family and friends.

We had a nice Friday-night dinner with 18 people around the table, lots of food, and enough leftovers to last at least a week { or too… }.

Sit-down dinner

We wanted our guests to feel comfortable at the table, and not to walk around with their food; There were families with little children, and we wanted to avoid finding food scraps and spills later, in every niche and crevice. Continue reading

Personal. Portrait.

signature

Years ago, I was lucky to meet a wonderful man with broad horizons.

I won’t dwell on his vast knowledge, wisdom, capacities and talents in order to preserve his privacy and modesty.

Nearly twenty years of happy marriage, four beautiful children, and three academic degrees later, his wife decides to bestow upon him a personal gift to celebrate his appointment to a senior position in his academic field.

Since this man esteems knowledge and philosophy of almost every realm, including history, literature, music, mathematics, economics, and Jewish philosophy, his wife intuitively knows that the gift that will touch his heart

more than a party,

more than a night out at a restaurant,

more than even a daytrip –

is a portrait of Maimonides. Continue reading
